A career in the Armed Forces/Indian Army is glorious, prestigious and challenging to a great extent as serving armed forces symbolizes patriotism and unity in a diverse and composite culture of the country. One can join the great and world’s 4th largest Indian Army irrespective of caste, creed, religion, and community if he is empowered with required physical, mental, medical and educational criteria. The career in Indian Army enables youngsters to explore more fully the ocean of opportunities. The supreme command of the Armed Forces is vested in the President of India. However, the Union Cabinet is entrusted with the onus of National Defence issues. The Ministry of Defence and the Tri-Service Headquarters play the most vital role in all operational and Administrative activities.
Branches and Staff
One can enter into the Indian Army in many branches, like General Duty, Flying Branch, Medical Branch, Education Branch, Engineering or Law Branch through direct recruitment conducted by the prestigious UPSC or the Recruitment Directorate of Army Units.

Perks and Allowances
As per the 7th Central Pay Commission, the COMMISSIONED Officers are entitled to an executive figure of pay and allowances, MSP (Military Services Pay), Ration and canteen facilities at concessional rates, group insurance, high altitude pay and so on. At present the starting salary for Commissioned Officers viz. Lieutenant (for Army), Flying Officer (for Air Force), and Sub Lieutenant (for Navy) is in the pay band Rs.56,100 – 1,77,500+ MSP Rs.15500 p.m. (fixed) + D.A.+ T.A. + Flying Allowance and so on. That means the amount payable is more than Rs.80k a month plus many other benefits.

1. National Defence Academy (NDA) Examination
For admission to and training at National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, Pune
Educational Criteria –
10+2 Passed in any stream for Army (Science Stream for Air Force and Navy)
Paper – I (Mathematics MCQ Type… 300 Marks),
Paper – ll (English and General Knowledge MCQ Type… 200+ 400 Marks)
The month of Notification is January
The training programme of NDA is a Three Years Graduation Course affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. After successful completion of three years training at NDA the Cadets are sent to Indian Military Academy, Dehradun for pre-commissioning training the successful completion of which ensures commissioned rank in Indian Army.
2. Combined Defence Service Examination
For admission to and training at Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun and Officers’ Training Academy, Chennai.
Graduation in any stream for Army (Science Stream for Air Force and Navy)
For IMA – English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics (MCQ Type)
For OTA – English and General Knowledge (MCQ Type)
Candidates trained at IMA got Permanent Service Commission and those trained at
OTA got Short Service Commission on the basis of merit and choice given at the time of filling forms. Both are two years pre-commissioning training.
3. SSC Technical Entry Examination
Indian Army conducts SSC Technical Entry Examination for married/ unmarried Men and Women Engineering Graduates to grant Short Service Commission in Armed Forces. The training courses are conducted by OTA, Chennai.
Educational Criteria –
A B.E. Degree from a recognized University in Civil Eng./ Mechanical Eng./ Electrical Eng./ Aeronautical Eng./ Computer Eng. & Science etc. Final Year candidates can also apply but they will have to submit final Degree Certificate within 12 weeks from the date of commencement of training at OTA, Chennai.
4. JCO, NCO, and Soldier General Duty Recruitment Examinations
The Recruitment Examinations for JCO, NCO and Soldier General Duty are conducted by the Recruitment Directorate of the concerned Army Units. The Educational criteria for the posts of JCO and NCO are Graduation and for Soldier General Duty is 10 std. pass.
