A part of total available seats in UPSEE examination is reserved. The reservation is little complex and students should clearly understand even before they apply for the UPSEE exams. So broadly there are two types of reservation:-
Let us first understand these two categories
1. Vertical Reservation – in UPSEE, candidates who belong to castes such as SC/ST and OBC are given Vertical Quota. In UPSEE 50% seats of the total seats are reserved in Vertical Quota.
Under this process, 50% of seats are open only to candidates of the Vertical Quota.
If some seats remain vacant in the Vertical Quota then those seats are later made available to General category(non-reserved category).
Vertical Quota candidates can also apply in the non-reserved category. Which means more seats will be available for reserved castes.
2. Horizontal Reservation – UPSEE reserves 30% seats under this category.
If you are thinking that total reserved seats in UPSEE are 80%(50 vertical + 30 horizontal) then you are wrong
Horizontal reservation reserves 30% seats in each Vertical category. Which means if females from UP have 20% horizontal quota then SC females will have 20% reservation in their category similarly ST and OBC females will have 20% reservation in their respective vertical reservation categories. Similarly non-reserved or general category female will have 20% reservation in their Vertical category.
Since this looks little confusing let us take an example
Suppose there is a total of 100 seats in UPSEE. 50 seats are vertically reserved for SC/ST/OBC. Each category individually has share as below:-
OBC – 27 seats
SC – 21 seats
ST – 2 seats
Females have 20% horizontal quota. This means that out of a total of 27 OBC seats 20% has to be occupied by females. Which comes around 5 or 6 seats. Similar will be the case for other categories as well.
Note: All the horizontal category seats have to be occupied by the respective reserved category.
Suppose in OBC category if out of 5 only 3 female candidates got a seat. Then two lowest-ranked males will be removed and the two highest-ranked females from the leftover female OBC candidates will be given those two seats.
Current Reservation in UPSEE

Note: Candidates can apply for only one type of Horizontal Reservation
Note: However female candidates can claim for any one of UPFF/UPAF/UPHC along with UPGL
3% weightage of the total marks obtained in UPSEE will be given to those UPGE candidates who have passed the qualifying examination from an intitute in rura area of UP.
